How Moscow Grabs Ukrainian Kids and Makes Them Russians

How Moscow Grabs Ukrainian Kids and Makes Them Russians

How Moscow Grabs Ukrainian Kids (← Click on the photo to watch the whole slide show!) The first slide narrates – "Olga Lopatkina embraces her adopted children in a park in Loue, western France, Saturday, July 2, 2022. After two months of negotiation and an initial objection from a senior Russian official, DPR authorities finally agreed to allow a volunteer with power of attorney from Lopatkina to collect her children who were evacuated from Mariupol. An Associated Press investigation has found that Russia’s strategy to take Ukrainian orphans and bring them up as Russian is well underway."

Another slide from the above slide show states – "Children from an orphanage in the Donetsk region, eat a meal at a camp in Zolotaya Kosa, the settlement on the Sea of Azov, Rostov region, southwestern Russia, Friday, July 8, 2022. Russia's open effort to adopt Ukrainian children and bring them up as Russian is emerging as one of the most explosive issues of the war." The accompaying photo shows sad-faced little children eating a skimpy meal in their new "homeland" in Russia. Once, when we visited Latvia to get new visas to return to Russia, we saw a memorial statue to the thousands of Latvian children who had been kidnapped by the Russians during WW2 and taken to Russia to become Russians. These instances are much like when Nebuchadnezzar conquered Israel and took Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednigo to Babylon, along with thousands of other Hebrew children, to be raised as Babylonians. Pray that God will raise up prophets like Daniel among these children.

Why are up to 60,000 Ukrainians being forced to "evacuate" Kherson? See "Ethnic Cleansing? Fear? Damage Control? Why Russia Really Wants To Get Ukrainians Out Of Kherson" ... and why are Russian soldiers looting everything ("televisions, refrigerators, furniture, kettles and other household items") in sight: see "Russian Soldiers Looting as They Flee Zaporizhzhia, Kherson – Report." They are behaving just like the ancient barbarians.

Kirill backs PutinThe recent article "PATRIARCH KIRILL’S CRUSADE" in the "Orthodox Christian Laity" newsletter tells how Kirill has followed the tactic of Pope Urban II who, in 1095, "told a large gathering of knights in Southern France that it was their responsibility to avenge the Islamic conquest of the Holy Land. ...Urban introduced an entirely novel – some might say heretical – way of thinking about the relationship between Christian piety and violence. Near the end of his sermon, Urban declared, 'Set out on this journey and you will obtain the remission of your sins and be sure of the incorruptible glory of the kingdom of heaven.i"

In the same way, "Kirill declared in a recent sermon that Russian soldiers who die in Ukraine will have their sins forgiven. The only difference between Kirill’s declaration and Urban’s is that Kirill is directing Russian soldiers to make war against fellow Orthodox Christians. It is a sad irony that Kirill believes Ukrainian Christians belong to his own super-jurisdiction." So Kirill's jihad promises that if Russian soldiers are killed while raping, murdering, plundering Ukrainian civilians and kidnapping their children, they get an immediate ticket to paradise.

Metropolitan Evgeny of TallinnBut Metropolitan Evgeny of Tallinn and All Estonia, the Estonian Orthodox hierarch under the Moscow Patriarch, chooses to disagree: "METROPOLITAN OF ESTONIA DISTANCES HIMSELF FROM PATRIARCH’S HOMILY ABOUT FORGIVENESS OF SINS FOR SOLDIERS." He issued this statement –

"Based on Orthodox doctrine, the Estonian Orthodox Church opposes war; it stands for peace and for the peaceful resolution of any conflicts, which was once again emphasized in the address of the Synod of the Estonian Orthodox Church of October 6 this year.

"In this regard, I inform you that I do not share the words of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, pronounced by him in a sermon on 09.25.2022, about the absolution of all sins to soldiers who die while fulfilling their military duty.

On March 19 of this year, I joined the Statement of the Council of Churches of Estonia condemning the war and calling for the cessation of hostilities. Since then, my position has remained unchanged."

The Rainbow: a Blessing, or a Curse?

The Rainbow: a Blessing, or a Curse?

rainbow over Pittsburgh, Oct. 4, 2022

Click the pic to see our mini-vacation photos! In 1 week we visited 7 friends and relatives in 5 cities in 4 states who have disabilities. My wife Cheryl is a good counselor and comforter to these people. Altogether, we drove 1,550 miles in 7 days. As we were approaching our home in Pittsburgh, we were treated to a double rainbow, the brightest one shining right over the area where we live. It was a real blessing!

As you know, the first appearance of a rainbow recorded in the Bible was after Noah and his family survived the Great Flood. In Genesis 9:12 & 15 we read – "And God said, 'This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature with you, for everlasting generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth . . . and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.'"

But as you also know, symbols of God's goodness and mercy can sometimes be distorted into just the opposite: when the Israelites in the wilderness grumbled against Moses – "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loathes this disgusting bread", God sent serpents to bite them. When they repented, God told Moses to make a bronze serpent, and "if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked to the serpent of brass, he lived" (Genesis 21:5-9).

So Israel kept the bronze serpent and it passed down from generation to generation. But in 2 Kings 18:4 we read that when Hezekiah became king – "he cut down the poles of Asherah worship and demolished the bronze serpent which Moses had made, for up to those days the Israelites were offering incense to it and called it Nehushtan." They made this life-saving bronze serpent into an idol and used it in their sex orgies that were part of Asherah worship. It's interesting that in the Bible idolatry is almost always linked with sexual sins.

In the same way, the rainbow that was a symbol of God's mercy has become a symbol of sexual sins: lesbians, homosexuals, bisexuals, and transgenders all claim the rainbow as their symbol. This transmutation of symbols, meanings, and values is common throughout history. The Israelites had holy days for harvest time, but rather than worshiping God they turned away from holiness to wickedness –

"Neither do they say in their heart, Let us now fear the Lord our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; who preserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest. Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good from you. For among my people are found wicked men: they watch, as fowlers lie in wait; they set a trap, they catch men. As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and grew rich. They have grown fat, they shine: yes, they surpass in deeds of wickedness; they don't plead the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; and the right of the needy they don't judge. Shall I not visit for these things? says the Lord; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? An awesome and horrible thing is happening in the land: the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will you do in the end of it?" (Jeremiah 5:24-31).

Notice here that some people use deceit to become great and rich – embezzlement, and it involved the religious leaders, the prophets. And the "people love to have it so." People often play religious games, "play church," thinking that their religious jargon, costumes, symbols, and rituals will somehow earn God's favor. Meanwhile, they practice deceit, embezzlement, and extortion... especially the religious leaders who know how to misuse these religious symbols in order to manipulate and deceive, become great, and grow rich.

How long will we have to put up with this? "God presides in the great assembly. He judges among the gods. 'How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked?' Selah. 'Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy. Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked'" (Psalm 82:1-4). God presides, He rules over all. He will call to account all those phony religious leaders who extort, embezzle, and commit adultery. But here's what the Lord requires –

"Thus says the Lord, Keep justice, and do righteousness; for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who holds it fast; who keeps the Sabbath from profaning it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil. Neither let the foreigner, who has joined himself to the Lord, speak, saying, the Lord will surely separate me from his people; neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. For thus says the Lord of the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and hold fast my covenant: To them I will give in my house and within my walls a memorial and a name better than of sons and of daughters; I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off" (Isaiah. 56:1-5).

The eunuch is one who is celebate, or should be. Such people sometimes wish to break their celibacy and they fall into sin. Those who fall will have their names in ignominy. But those who remain pure will be memorialized with "a name better than of sons and of daughters."

JUDGMENT MUST BEGIN AT THE HOUSE OF GOD

JUDGMENT MUST BEGIN AT THE HOUSE OF GOD

Judgment Must Begin At The House Of God

"For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God.
If it begins first with us,
what will happen to those who don't obey the gospel of God?
If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will happen to the ungodly and the sinner?"
(1 Peter 4:17-18)

From the section on St. Augustine on our Literature page, I quote: "Around A.D. 385, a certain young and ambitious teacher of public speaking named Augustine came to Milan to learn from Ambrose his oratorical technique, became a Christian and was baptized by Ambrose in A.D. 386. ... Saints Ambrose and Augustine both were proponents of priestly celibacy. Later, Emperor Justinian called the Quinisext Council (Trullo) in 692, in which the Canon XIII reaffirmed the Apostolic Tradition of married clergy, and it recognized that the Church in Rome was not observing Apostolic Tradition." So at least ever since the fourth century, there has been disagreement among Christian leaders concerning monastic and priestly celibacy. Enforcing celibacy for most religious workers has led to all sorts of scandals in the Church. In Matthew 19:10-12, when the Lord had been teaching about marriage and divorce, we read –

"His disciples said to Him, 'If this is the case of the man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry.' But He said to them, 'Not all men can receive this saying, but those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven's sake. He who is able to receive it, let him receive it.'"

A eunuch is a man who for various reasons does not have sexual relations. As the Lord said, some are "born that way from their mother's womb" – this is not a justification for homosexuals to say they were just "born that way" in order claim a Scriptural basis for their homosexual lifestyle: a eunuch doesn't have any sexual relations. The point here is that celibacy is a valid lifestyle "for the Kingdom of Heaven's sake." It's not for everyone, though, only for those who are able to receive it. Those who cannot receive it should not take a vow of celibacy in the first place.

In 1 Corinthians ch. 7, St. Paul wrote about abstinence before marriage and faithfulness in marriage – "Now concerning the things about which you wrote to me: it is good for a man not to touch a woman. But, because of sexual immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband" (verses 1-2). And later, in verse 24 – "Brothers, let each man, in whatever condition he was called, stay in that condition with God." This has been understood to mean that if a man is single when called into ministry, he should remain single, and if he is married, he should remain married to his spouse: divorce is not allowed for clergy. So priests are allowed to be married before they are ordained, but if they are single when ordained they should remain in that condition.

Why then are higher ranks of clergy such as bishops, archbishops, and patriarchs all celibate? First of all, this doesn't mean they have never been married, because a widowed priest can become a bishop: we know such a priest whose wife died and he was made a bishop. Second, this is a general rule, not an iron-clad law in the Church: we also knew a married Russian priest in Moscow who was elected to be a bishop because he was such a good priest. So there are exceptions to the rule. But if any celibate ordained clergyman wants to marry, he must renounce his vows and leave ordained ministry. Any celibate clergy who marries or has sexual relations outside of marriage must be "defrocked" – removed from the ordained ministry.

In my article SEEK THE WELFARE OF THE CITY, PART 2, you will read my comments on 1 Cor. 5:7-12 – "By mentioning "Christ, our Passover" and "let us keep the feast" it is clear that St. Paul is referring to fellowship at the communion table, the early Church's 'agape feast.' He also uses the Greek word "pornos" that is translated here as 'sexual sinners' and in this context refers to incest. But the root meaning of "pornos" is a male prostitute, that is, a homosexual. The Apostle Paul teaches here that sexual sinners, the covetous, extortioners, drunkards or idolaters should not be allowed to partake of communion" – i.e., be excommunicated, disfellowshipped. This applies especially to homosexual acts and extramarital affairs as more to be condemned than the other types of sin mentioned here.

Christ is the Head of the Church, and He expects the Church to discipline its members when it is necessary, and especially the leadership is not above discipline. They are to be an example to the flock, just as the Church is to be an example to the world:
"Judgment Must Begin At The House Of God." May God have mercy on me too, a sinner!

THE COMING DEMISE OF RUSSIAN AUTOCRACY AND PATRIARCHY?

THE COMING DEMISE OF RUSSIAN AUTOCRACY AND PATRIARCHY?

General Kirill See MSN's very recent article "Kirill, the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church who considers Putin to be a 'miracle'" with a fascinating slide show depicting him as a strong supporter of Putin and the Russian military, lending all the splendor and regal robes of his patriarchal position to the support of Putin's war in Ukraine.

As I write this, Ukrainian armed forces are pushing Russian forces out of Kharkiv in the east as well as advancing toward Kherson in the south, as despirited Russian soldiers have lost both the will and the supplies with which to fight. If Ukraine were to retake Kherson, it would threaten to cut off Russia's "land bridge" to Crimea. Ukraine's new missiles are already destroying military bases and command centers in Crimea. If and when Ukraine drives the Russian forces completely out of Ukraine, what will become of Kirill's prestige and power, not to mention Putin's? Already, some "Russian Officials Propose Overthrowing Putin, Charging Him With Treason" per Newsweek magazine.

While we were living in Moscow and I was leading the project to revise the Russian Bible in the early 2000s, one of our Russian coworkers was a young man who worked in then-Metropolitan Kirill's office of the Russian Orthodox Church's external relations department. He was working with us ostensibly because Kirill's office couldn't afford to pay him a regular salary. At about the same time, I had been invited as a representative of an American publishing ministry to a meeting with Russian Orthodox bishops... who, as these bishops drove up each in their black Mercedes sedan, said that the other Western guests were given a special half-price rate for rooms at the Russian Patriarch's hotel: "only" $200 per night, not $400: what a bargain! But they didn't have enough money to pay my Russian coworker. (At the time, foreigners could find a decent hotel room in Moscow for under $50 a night including breakfast, and we were renting a Russian apartment for about $200 a month.)

This young man told me one time that he reported about me to the Russian FSB (the successor to the Soviet's KGB), saying that I was no threat to Russia. He also claimed that I of course reported to U.S. intelligence agencies, which I denied, saying that it was illegal for American religious workers to also work for or report to U.S. intelligence agencies. So I am personally aware of the fact that Kirill's office cooperates with the Russian intelligence services.

How and why could it ever happen that such a "Devil's bargain" could occur between church and state in Russia? Kievan Rus adopted Orthodox Christianity in 988 A.D. (My wife and I drove to Chicago in 1988 to celebrate the "Millenium of Russian Christianity" at a Ukrainian Orthodox cathedral there: now the Ukrainian Orthodox in the U.S. and Canada are strongly opposed to Russia.) To understand this issue, let me explain a bit of history: in the 10th through 15th centuries, Kyiv was the center of Orthodox Christianity, eventually having the largest number of Orthodox followers anywhere.

But by the end of the 16th century, as the article "HOW THE RUSSIAN CHURCH BECAME PATRIARCHAL" explains on page 2, "Then, in January, 1589 Patriarch Jeremiah and Tsar Theodore Ivanovich presided over a 'Holy Synod of the Great Russian Empire and of the Greek Empire' which sanctioned the creation of an autocephalous Russian patriarchate."

To clarify this rather lengthy obfuscation, I woud add a clarification: "In actual fact, Patriarch Jeremiah was imprisoned by the Ottomans and the Muscovites, and was forced to elevate the see of Moscow to a patriarchy [Studylight.org]." Feel free to research this on your own: Fr. Thomas Hopko, in one of his Ancient Faith Radio podcasts, years ago tipped me off about this by saying that the Russians had virtually kidnapped the Ecumenical Patriarch and were holding him hostage until he agreed to make Moscow a Patriarchate and the center of Slavic Orthodoxy. So there you have it: the Moscow church supplanted Kyiv's and has been in bed with the semi-pagan state for over 500 years, since the time of Tsar Ivan the Terrible.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

woe to hypocrisy (← Click to see full-size) This is a familiar expression not only to Christians but also to the secularists who decry the hypocrisy of some who call themselves Christians. If someone tells me he won't believe in Christ because there are hypocrites in the Church, I reply – "There's always room for one more!" You see, to some extent we are all hypocrites, even Christians.

The Lord Jesus Christ repeats the phrase "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" seven times in Matthew 23:13-29 – it's called "the seven-fold woes." Also as this picture illustrates, when the Scribes and Pharisees brought to the Lord a woman caught in adultery, he put them in their place by saying – "He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone" (see John 8:1-11).

There are two kinds of hypocrites: those who sincerely believe that they're doing God a favor by their strict hyper-religiosity and those who are consciously aware that they are trying to deceive people by their hyper-religious acting. What lies behind these texts is that we so often identify with the self-righteous Scribes and Pharisees, pointing our finger at "the lowlife scum, the alcoholics, drug addicts, fornicators, homos, and social parasites" ...as all the while there are three of our fingers pointing back at us.

If the Lord meant these words to be directed only to the Scribes and Pharisees, there would be no need to record them in the Gospels. No, these words are recorded for us too, that's why they're in the Gospels. What is the remedy for this malady of the soul? See Luke 18:10-14 –

"Two men went up into the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: 'God, I thank you, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn't even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

The only cure for the sins of pride, deceit, and hypocrisy is humility – "God, be merciful to me, a sinner! Lord, have mercy!"

The Sheep and the Goats

The Sheep and the Goats

goats don't turn into sheep The Lord Jesus, in Matthew ch. 25, gave us the parable of the sheep and the goats: the sheep go to heaven but the goats go to hell. Some believe we are predestined to one fate or the other, there's nothing you can do about it, no way to change your fate, you're "born that way." But is this always true?

Last week, we read about Eusygnius the Martyr of Antioch in our online "Morning Prayers and Readings." Eusygnius was martyred for his confession of faith to the Emperor Julian "the Apostate." Julian had been raised as a Christian, he studied the faith with Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian and was even tonsured a reader in the Church. But later, Julian apostacized, he denied the faith and attempted to return his whole empire to paganism.

So it is possible for someone to confess Christ and later to deny Him like Judas did, to apostacize. Some will say – "Well, he never really believed in Christ to begin with!" But history is replete with stories of people who really thought they were believers and had eternal security, a guaranteed ticket to heaven, so they fell into sin – like pastors absconding with the church secretary and millions of dollars from their church – and thus denying Christ. Like Julian the Apostate, a "sheep" can become a "goat."

On the other hand, in a small number of cases "goats" can turn into "sheep" – read "Switching Sides: The Elusive ‘Russian Legion’ Fighting With Ukraine" about Russian soldiers and civilians who have joined the top-secret Russian Legion because they could not with a good conscience fight against Ukraine or stand idly by. Such conversions among adults are quite rare: for example, the most fruitful fields for evangelism are among teens and young adults – deathbed confessions of faith occur very seldom because as people grow older, they become more and more set in their ways. But they can happen!

In Matthew 10:14-15 we read – "Whoever doesn't receive you, nor hear your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake off the dust from your feet. Most assuredly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on Judgment Day than for that city." As the Lord Jesus was sending out His 12 apostles to evangelize, He told them there would be many who would reject the Gospel and the consequences would be more severe for these "religious" people who were stuck in their mistaken beliefs than for the homosexual perverts in Sodom and Gomorrah who tried to rape God's angelic messengers.

Some pro-LGBTQ folks twist this Scripture text to say the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah refers to not offering hospitality to strangers. But a straightforward reading of this text and other related texts contradict this notion, for example Ezekiel 16:49-50 – "Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. They were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw fit." Instead of offering hospitality, the homosexuals of Sodom and Gomorrah committed abomination before God.

As we see in the article "IT'S "NOT MORAL" TO REQUEST ABSTINENCE TO STOP MONKEYPOX: LGBT ACTIVIST," there are some LGBTQ people who will insist that their lifestyle is moral and anyone who doesn't condone it is immoral and a "hater." Their value system is turned upside-down. But the point here is not chiefly about homosexuality. The context is evangelism and about people's refusing to accept the Good News: that is a worse sin than homosexual behavior.

It may be difficult and rare for hardened people to convert, but once in a while a "goat" can be converted and become a "sheep"! As Romans 12:1-2 states – "Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

Build a "DIY" Booklet Rack!

Build a "DIY" Booklet Rack!

(← Click to see full-screen.) We've designed and built a "DIY" booklet rack for our free 5.5" x 8.5" booklets. You can too, by using these downloadable PDF instructions (set print size to "print to paper") on how to build them yourself from a sheet of 1/4" x 2' x 4' plywood. This booklet rack will cost just about $20 for materials. The only tools and supplies you need are a hammer and 3/4" wire brads, a sabre saw, a drill, wood glue, some sandpaper, paint and a brush. A donation jar is optional. It helps to have a workbench, If you have any further questions about it, write us.

To find these booklets, go to this page: https://agape-biblia.org/literatura/, press Ctrl-F and search for "5.5" (without the quotes) to see the title, author's name, number of pages, and description; or click → here ← for a list of just the titles with the direct link to each booklet.

Here are just a couple of these booklets: Building the New City - St. Basil's Social Vision, by Paul Schroeder. This 16-page booklet is a concise overview of St. Basil's "New City." He donated all his wealth to the poor for constructing the "New City" just outside Caesarea. He devised a new approach for monastics: both monks and nuns should serve God by serving mankind. Basil's Basiliad or "New City" had a hospital, lodging for pilgrims, and housing for the poor and elderly along with the monasteries.

And read Building the ARC by this webmaster. This 11-page essay and 9 pages of sketches illustrate a way to put St. Basil's "New City" (above) into practice on a realistic small scale for a single parish. You might ask - "Why would I want to build an ARC, anyway? Do I look like Noah?" How do you start building it? First, you gather people together who are committed to living together as Christians in community. Then take our 1 year of courses to train people how to do practical, hands-on ministry.

Why bother? Why read all this stuff? Why isn't it enough just to believe in Jesus, repent, be baptized, take holy communion once a month, and put a few dollars in the offering? Now that you've gotten the afterlife taken care of, why not get with it and enjoy this life? – that's the "minimalist" approach for many Christians. So in the past day or two, I've added this short paragraph to my online web page and booklet "A First-Century View of Yeshua, the Messiah" right after his baptism by John –

"If Yeshua the Messiah is now proclaimed to be God's sacrificial Lamb, why didn't he immediately go to Jerusalem, be crucified, and rise again? His three years of ministry were necessary to train his disciples how to do diakonia-ministry!"

(Bookmark this "First Century" web page and/or get the printed booklet here: https://agape-biblia.org/literatura/#1st-century.)

What we've done in the past century by secularizing Christianity is that we've set up a false dualism: an "either-or" choice. Either we believe and preach the message of getting people saved and on their way to heaven, or we get them involved in social action – feeding the poor, healing the sick, and counseling the broken-hearted. But it's not a false "either-or" choice, it's "both-and" – do both ...and start by reading these booklets!
